Working over Christmas survey

Looking forward to your Christmas break? Work is just a call away

  • 40% of Australians will work from home over their Christmas break, despite being on annual leave
  • Only 16% of those not taking annual leave plan to work from home

SYDNEY – December 13, 2010 – Fonality (www.fonality.com.au), a leading provider of cloud-based business phone and unified communication solutions, today released the results of its first Fonality Working from Home survey, quizzing 1,000 Australians about their holiday plans for the festive season. The survey found 40% will do some work between Christmas and New Year’s
Eve despite being on annual leave.

Checking emails and answering business phone calls were the two most commonly named activities with 31% and 25% respectively. 25% of holidaymakers will do so several times a day.

Surprisingly, in the age of smartphones, the PC or laptop is still the most popular device to check emails remotely, with 82% versus only 15% on their mobile phones. For work calls, most respondents prefer their mobile phone with 66%, while 17% will use their fixed line and 7% VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol).

Australians will also draw on new communication tools to stay in touch with work, with 19% using Instant Messaging (IM) and 17% social media such as Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook.

Although 86% think that technology has made it easier to work from home, only 16% of people who have to work over Christmas will be able to do so remotely.

“Whilst we obviously encourage a healthy work / life balance, not everyone has the choice to take time off over Christmas. Take for example small business owners who often need to be contactable irrespective of the time of year,” said Marc Englaro, managing director of Fonality Australia.

“In today’s highly competitive and globalised business environment, many people need to be contactable wherever they are, whether it’s the holidays or not. Having a flexible unified communications solution means people have access to a variety of communications tools on a number of different devices, be it their PC, laptop, mobile phone or tablet.”

On average, 47% of Australians will be taking time off over Christmas. Canberrans are the most likely to take leave with 95% of respondents on holidays between Christmas and New Year’s. 100% of those who work over the festive season in the ACT will do so from home. In contrast, Tasmanians are the most likely to work over Christmas with only 39% on leave. 60% of NT residents will be on leave, followed by 58% in VIC, 54% in QLD residents, 53% in WA, 49% in NSW, and 44% in SA.
